Teeth that get broken or damaged can cause more serious dental problems, especially if the issue is not addressed in the soonest possible time. A common broken tooth accident can start with the simple act of chewing on something hard, and then suddenly feel a sharp edge to a tooth – a surefire sign that the tooth has been broken, chipped, or damaged. Broken teeth problems will need to be checked by a dentist immediately, so that the affected tooth can be repaired without any complications, or without the threat of infections setting in.

What to Do Before Going to the Dentist

The best way to deal with broken teeth is to seek treatment from a dentist as soon as possible. In the meantime, the following can be done while on the way to the dentist to have the broken teeth (or tooth) checked, to ensure a successful broken tooth/teeth treatment:

• Rinse the mouth with warm salty water – this will help ease the pain, and will also act as a disinfectant for the affected area

• If the area or broken tooth is bleeding, a clean piece of gauze or bandage should be applied directly onto the location for about 10 minutes, or until the bleeding stops. A tea bag can also be used to stop the flow of blood.

• If the lips or the inner mouth lining has been bruised, or cut, by the broken teeth, a cold pack can be applied to reduce swelling and pain. An over the counter pain reliever can also be taken to help ease the discomfort.
